First-Year Students – Next Steps (2024)

FAQs

What is the next step after getting accepted to college? ›

Once you've been accepted, you'll have many new obligations and deadlines—deadlines to accept enrollment, apply for housing, submit final high school transcripts, take placement tests and file financial aid forms, to name a few tasks. Remember that many schools require an enrollment deposit or acceptance fee.

What happens if you don't decline admission? ›

Technically, you do not have to officially decline a college acceptance. If you ignore a college acceptance letter, admissions will consider that the same as a rejection. However, it's more respectful to decline.

How to answer what will you contribute to our college? ›

If you've worked with diverse groups, explain how you'll support an inclusive community. Be specific about how your experiences have shaped you and can add value to the college environment. And remember, it's not just about what you've done, but also the perspective you bring.

Why do people say first year instead of freshman? ›

Other colleges such as Bates and Colby have made the change for similar reasons. University of South Carolina's Whitney Watts cites a second reason for colleges to abandon freshman: the term was originally invented as a word for an inexperienced person, or a novice.

Can a college reject you after acceptance? ›

Although higher education institutions prefer not to and luckily rarely have to, it is important to known that it is possible for colleges to rescind their admissions offer even after an acceptance letter has been delivered.

What is the next step after college? ›

Some people continue their education. Others go on to get a job in their chosen fields, while some spend time volunteering, starting a business, or taking a gap year to recharge. The truth is, what comes after a bachelor's degree is up to you. Consider all the opportunities ahead to make the best choice.

Can I accept two college offers? ›

Double depositing means putting down a deposit, and thus accepting admission, at more than one college. Since a student can't attend multiple colleges, it is considered unethical.

Do I have to tell other colleges I'm not going? ›

It may not be something that they feel comfortable doing, but yes, it is customary (and thoughtful!) to let a college know that they do not plan to attend that particular school. Your child should communicate with every college and university they don't plan to attend.

What are the early signs that you have been accepted into a university? ›

Unless the university sends you a letter or email where they say you are accepted, there are no other things. Universities can send such a letter before the official day when they announce the decisions on their admissions portal. Especially when the student is selected for honors program or some scholarship.

What makes you unique? ›

To answer the question of what makes you unique, start by identifying your strengths and attributes that differentiate you from others. Consider your skills, experiences, and personal qualities that make you stand out. Are you particularly creative? Do you have strong problem-solving abilities?

What is the best answer for "Tell me about yourself"? ›

The best way to answer "Tell me about yourself" is with a brief highlight-summary of your experience, your education, the value you bring to an employer, and the reason you're looking forward to learning more about this next job and the opportunity to work with them.

What is the first thing colleges look at? ›

Good grades, a challenging high school curriculum, standardized test scores, extracurriculars, and a strong essay are a few key factors admissions officers assess.

Is freshman year harder than sophom*ore? ›

Though sophom*ore year students feel a bit more comfortable in their environment, sophom*ore year still may be just a bit tougher than freshman year. Academically many would feel that the workload is similar to freshman year, just a little bit more homework.

Is freshman year a big deal? ›

Freshman year is often considered to be a sort of transition from middle school to high school, and sure, it is that, but it's also very important. 8th grade doesn't go on your college apps (except for USC, for some reason), but 9th grade absolutely does. If colleges can see it, it absolutely matters.

Does freshman year matter that much? ›

The courses and grades you receive freshman year determine courses for the next year and continue to build from there. Thus, one's freshman year classes and grades shape the rest of their high school career. Similarly, involvement in extracurriculars early on helps students earn a spot on a club's board down the road.

What to do after accepting college offer? ›

Congratulations on getting accepted into college!
  1. Wait for more options.
  2. Do your research.
  3. Talk it out.
  4. Reflect.
  5. Access your student portal.
  6. Keep track of deadlines.

What do colleges send you when you get accepted? ›

A college acceptance letter is an official notification from a college or university that informs the prospective student that the school has evaluated their application and has granted them admission to their institution.

How long does it take to hear back from college acceptance? ›

Key Takeaway. You'll probably hear back from the colleges you applied to within one to two months. But the time it takes to hear back may vary depending on when you submitted your application and which application plan (ED, EA, RD) you chose.

What is the process of getting accepted into a college? ›

Applying to college typically involves taking standardized tests, writing personal statements, collecting letters of recommendation, and filling out applications.
